vReps

vReps (virtual representatives) are Discovery Agents installed on devices within a virtual private network. Despite being part of an internal network, vReps can be detected by the external Absolute cloud server. Devices with vReps installed are referred to as domain controllers.

To discover additional devices, the cloud server sends a request to a domain controller (vRep). The vRep then scans its network, identifies other devices, and installs the agent where applicable.

Important Information

The Discovery Task can install the Micro Agent on Windows-based devices as needed.

It is recommended to install the vRep agent only on devices that are always on, such as servers.

A vRep is required for communication with Mac and Linux devices. Tasks targeting these OS types will be routed through the vRep.

The first vRep registered with your cloud console is automatically approved. Any additional vReps must be approved manually.

While the solution can operate without any vReps, this limits management to Windows or Mac devices that already have the Micro Agent or Mac Agent installed.

Where to Manage vReps

vReps can be viewed and managed from the Devices section in the console:

Navigate to Devices > vReps to see all vReps currently reporting to your console.

vReps are marked with blue device icons:

  • Dark-blue indicates the vRep is online.
  • Light-blue indicates it is offline.

How to Manage vReps

Approve or reject newly installed vReps from the list.

Assign vReps to specific sites to ensure discovery tasks are routed properly.

Monitor their status and connectivity to ensure proper task execution, especially for Linux and Mac devices.
